Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Here are some of our Frequently Asked Questions. Where do MHC cats and dogs come from?
MHC rescues healthy, adoptable pets that have been put on the shelter's euthanasia list and we put them up for adoption. Pets come from all over Midland/Odessa area. Some are strays; some have been abandoned; and some come from homes that are no longer able to care for them for an inevitable reason. They usually end up in the Midland Animal Services shelter. They do the best that they can, but oftentimes they have no choice but to euthanize animals for lack of space. How do you pick which cats and dogs to rescue?
Because we have limited space, our vets handpick the healthiest animals with the best temperaments from the city shelter’s euthanasia list so we can ensure that they will be highly adoptable. What is a no-kill shelter? Are you really "no-kill"?
A “no-kill” shelter is an animal shelter that does not kill healthy or treatable animals even when the shelter is full. Euthanasia is only considered for terminally ill animals or those considered dangerous to public safety. MHC is a no-kill facility. We ensure all the pets in our care will end up in a loving home. Since we screen all the pets we rescue from the shelter to ensure that they are healthy, we have not had any incidents that have required euthanizing a pet in our care. Is Midland Humane Coalition the same thing as PetSmart?
No. Midland Humane Coalition is a separate non-profit organization that functions out of the PetSmart in Midland. PetSmart Charities is our sponsor and they have allowed us to operate the Adoption Center within their premises. I found a dog. Can I take and drop them off at the Adoption Center?
No. We can scan them for a microchip and try to contact the owner if there is a microchip, but we cannot hold them in our Adoption Center. There is a lost/found list of Facebook pages and websites under the “Lost/Found/Educate” tab to network the animal on. We also recommend posting pictures in the neighborhood where the animal was found or at any local vets. I found a litter of kittens/puppies. Can I take and drop them off at the Adoption Center?
No. We cannot take strays into the Adoption Center, especially litters, because we do not have the room to take care of young animals. We do have a couple kitten fosters that we can check with to see if they have room; but unfortunately, space is very limited. There is a lost/found list of Facebook pages and websites under the “Lost/Found/Educate” tab to network the animal on. We also recommend posting pictures in the neighborhood where the animals were found. I have feral cats on my property. Can I take and drop them off at the Adoption Center or can you come get them from me?
No. Feral cats are not adoptable and we do not take in strays from the public. We are not equipped to make house calls either. You can reach out to ___(insert new TNR contact info)___ about participating in our Trap, Neuter, Release Program, but you are responsible for scheduling and paying for each spay/neuter, trapping each cat, and transportation to and from the vet. The cat can then be released back in your area and not contribute to the feral cat overpopulation or networked to be a barn cat. Animal Control is the only one who can pick up animals on site and take them to Midland Animal Shelter. Do you give shots or microchips at the Adoption Center in PetSmart?
No, we do not have vet techs on site to administer shots/microchips. We sponsor Shot and Microchip Clinics off-site at various locations in the city (mostly city parks) if/when we can get a vet scheduled. *NOTE- Shot Clinics do not always happen every month. Dates, times, and locations of Shot Clinics are posted on the Midland Humane Coalition Facebook page once scheduled. How much are shots or microchips at your off-site chip clinics?
It varies based on the age of the animal and what round of shots they need. Refer to the Shot Clinic form (tell location on website) for pricing information. Does your organization offer low-cost spay and neuter clinics?
No, but if you live in the City of Midland or Midland County vouchers for 70$ are available to help reduce your costs. Please click the tab that says “Spay/Neuter” on our MHC website for more info on the city and county vouchers. I have a fully vetted dog/cat that I can no longer care for. Can I take and drop them off at the adoption center?
Maybe, on a case-by-case basis. Since we work mainly with the animal shelter and other rescue groups to save animals from euthanasia, space can be limited at times, especially for larger dogs. Wait time for intake varies based on adoptions and kennel space. Temperament testing must be done prior to being accepted and proof of vetting is required on intake. Certain breeds, very young puppies, medical cases and aging seniors may not be considered a good fit for our adoption center. Contact the Adoption Center if you are in need of assistance with a fully vetted animal you can no longer care for. |
